About The Castle of Tarragindi

The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Children’s Art Centre and Regional Services are delighted to present ‘The Castle of Tarragindi on Tour’ for children and families in regional and remote Queensland. ‘The Castle of Tarragindi on Tour’ has been developed to coincide with the Children’s Art Centre exhibition ‘Natalya Hughes: The Castle of Tarragindi’, on display at GOMA.

Australian artist Natalya Hughes creates paintings, textiles, sculptures and installations informed by decorative and ornamental traditions. In ‘The Castle of Tarragindi on Tour’, Hughes invites children to explore an imaginative design style known as ‘grotesque’ through fun activities. Grotesque artworks often feature hybrid forms, made from parts of different animals, plants and other shapes.

Since 1998, the Gallery has collaborated with more than 310 Australian and international contemporary artists. The Children’s Art Centre is a leader in developing interactive projects, activities and publications that engage children with contemporary cultures, artists and ideas. The Kids on Tour program provides this content free of charge to communities throughout Queensland.

About Renee Kire: Twist and Turn

Renee Kire artist headshot

Through the desire to champion feminist art history, Renee Kire draws inspiration from overshadowed female artists to develop new techniques for testing the precarious nature of minimalist sculpture.

Kire’s sculptures assert presence in an engaging, playful exploration of form, colour and space. The shapes bend and push, challenging and reshaping the historically male-dominated narrative and exploring the delicate balance between the presence and absence of the maker.
