About Woorabinda Fashion for Wellbeing

Woorabinda Fashion for Wellbeing is a fashion collective created by and for the people of Woorabinda. The lead facilitator of the collective is artist and designer, Laurita Hill, a Western Kangoulu woman. Hill describes Woorabinda as being on Wadja Country in Central Queensland, 170 kilometres southwest of Rockhampton. The town has connections to over 52 different First Nations tribal groups. Mimosa Creek is a seasonal waterway that flows through Woorabinda and is deeply significant for the artists involved with Healing Many Tribes activity space.

Members of Woorabinda Fashion for Wellbeing work together to design and create garments and accessories that are showcased at fashion parades held locally and beyond the community. These events are proud celebrations of culture and community, featuring models of all ages from Woorabinda walking the runway to a soundtrack of music created by recording artists with connections to the town.

Hill describes the aim of the collective as coming together to create a culturally safe space for personal expression that fosters social and emotional wellbeing and healing for members and community. Hill says the group is inspired by Elders who have “continued leading, educating and inspiring future generations to overcome past traumas forced upon First Nations communities, to create the resilient people we are today” (artist interview, 2023).

For Hill and the members of Woorabinda Fashion for Wellbeing, sharing culture through fashion is a way to respect Elders, empower young people, and make a positive difference for everyone in the community.
