Locust Jones
For over two decades, Locust Jones has developed a distinctive drawing practice that mirrors the constant flow of global news and current events. Working across drawing, sculpture, and installation, Jones translates the noise of the 24-hour news cycle into layered, complex compositions. He listens to live broadcasts and records fragments of speech, imagery, and sound, transforming this steady stream of information into large-scale, vertical works on paper. These drawings operate as visual records—documents of specific moments that reflect the turbulence and pressure of contemporary life, and the emotional labour of witnessing.
In his scrolls, words and images coalesce with the exposed nerves of an empath. They draw upon raw streams of conscience and compassion in an aching beauty of expressionist solemnity. (Douglas Kahn 2025)
In contrast, his recent galactic drawings slow this pace, turning attention away from human crises toward the vastness of the natural world. These dark expanses, punctuated by bursts of gold and light, consider the enormity of the universe and our position within it—a reminder of the distance between everyday events and cosmic time.
