Clay Portraits No 2-WEB.jpg

Born in Sydney in 1950, David Sawtell is a multi-faceted artist whose practice spans sculpture, charcoal on canvas portraiture, and installation across diverse media including metal, clay, timber, crystal, and graphite on paper. His work navigates the complex territories between identity, materiality, and social critique.

Sawtell holds a Master of Fine Arts from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, Brisbane, and has exhibited works for over three decades. In recent years, Sawtell's practice has evolved to focus on crystal as his primary medium, exploring its unique properties of fragility and transparency as metaphors for the delicate nature of identity itself.
