Beyond Abstraction investigates the field of non-representational art, showcasing works from the RMOA Collection that depart from depicting conventional likeness. The works utilise various abstract techniques including the manipulation of colour, form, shape, and expressive mark-making. Abstract works prioritise the evocation of emotion and alternative representations of reality, emphasising the artist’s pursuit of beauty or desire to capture important stories and information.

Beyond Abstraction highlights diverse approaches to abstraction but also critiques established artistic norms. By departing from conventional realism, Eurocentric views of the sublime, and idealised landscapes, viewers are encouraged to engage with art through alternative perspectives. This approach challenges prevailing traditionalist notions of beauty and place in art, inviting audiences to explore the power of abstraction in conveying complex emotions, ideas and experiences.
